Akira
I was unsure what rating to give this film, and then I remembered that I lowkey just rate on enjoyment so here we are. This is something that I'll rewatch one day, and it will probably involve a lot of pausing and writing things down, because I think there's a lot to be unearthed behind the bizarrely connected aspects of this film. For now though, I can definitely say that I enjoyed this film a lot. Neo Tokyo is one of the most interesting settings I've seen in a film, and I think a lot of this is owed to the animation — 1988?? I can't believe it came out nearly 40 years ago. Neo Tokyo itself is a living, breathing entity that pushes back and eventually yields to the plot. Biker gangs and child experimentation, inferiority complexes and spineless politicians, latent creative power and a deeply hedonistic society — this film is easily a must-watch, but just be prepared to be horrified and confused all at once in the last half-hour or so. 2/3 of the old school psychological anime films watched — Ghost in the Shell will be soon 💯
