Amadeus
Amadeus is absolutely phenomenal. It’s not just a period piece it’s an absolute whirlwind of genius, obsession, and tragedy wrapped up in humor and drenched in some of the most beautiful music ever composed. Despite its grand scale and dramatic themes, it’s also hilarious in moments. The way Mozart is portrayed as a loud, vulgar and childlike figure, is a brilliant contrast to the elegance of his music, and somehow it just works. Tom Hulce is electric as Mozart, blending the brilliance and the immaturity with pure energy. But F. Murray Abraham as Salieri is just outstanding. His performance is quietly devastating, full of bitterness, envy and awe. He earned that Oscar tenfold. Watching Salieri crumble under the weight of his mediocrity in the shadow of a divine talent is one of the most compelling character arcs I’ve ever seen.
The production design is also top-notch, lavish sets, candlelit interiors, and detailed costumes that transport you straight into 18th century Vienna. Milos Forman’s direction is also masterful, he balances humor and heartbreak with such precision, all while letting the music soar and drive the emotion of each scene. And speaking of the music, it’s absolutely captivating, and often left me sat in awe as Mozart presented his opera. Amadeus is more than a biopic it’s an insight into envy, genius, and the cruelty of fate.
