Hardcore by way of Hideo Kojima in the decade between THE NEON DEMON and this, NWR has put out two miniseries but he's also played HEARTMAN in Hideo Kojima's DEATH STRANDING duology and while there is A Lot to say about this film, the kojima fanboy inside me is thrilled to admit that this is Refn at his most kojima (for better or for worse) ofcourse there are career long obsessions and quirks that refn is still employing here and this is still His Thing through and through but i can't help but notice how the Charles Melton portion of the film literally feels like the Cliff Unger/Neil Vana portion of the DS games [a soldier going on a spree in a foreign unexplained land to find their child]. very happy to admit that i really loved this, i think refn's images do alot of the talking here and pino donaggio's incredibly layered music is a genuine contender for the best score of this year. Leatherman and Tarman gotta link up.
