Growing up, I have this memory of being maybe 9-10 years old and watching “unfriended” at a sleepover. Everyone else was fine by the end of the night, and I would’ve been too if not for the final jumpscare. I remember staying up so late that my friend’s mom saw me peek my head up from under the covers at around 5-6 am and she just asked “are you okay?”. I was PETRIFIED, now that I’m a little older and a bit wiser I realize unfriended is really silly, but this FUCKING movie evoked every emotion I could’ve possibly felt being little and seeing it for the first time. The scares were perfect, the characters were really truly characters, and the feeling of isolation calls back hard to COVID. I remember doing similar stuff, playing horror games with my friends over zoom calls and freaking eachother out. But aside from the relatability,
The goddamn KILLS in this movie though are what get me. Every single one is jarringly abrupt, like seriously. And it was even funnier going into it knowing nothing about how long it’d run, so I was sitting around expecting there to be another hour’s worth of events, but there wasn’t. And that honestly made it sO much scarier. I was constantly on my toes, fantastic movie. Also very cleverly done end credits. Absolutely loved them. I would love to see more short form horror movies like this.
