Sentimental Value
this film is so heartfelt, it really portrays generational trauma so subtly here. as much the main focus we see throughout the film is the development of the relationships of the borg family following the bereavement, the film made by gustav for nora to star in acts as a sort of healing mechanism for the ties between gustav (stellan skarsgård) and nora (renate reinsve) and agnes (inga ibsdotter lilleaas). there is something so tender about this film, with different depictions in which the varying traumatic events had affected our characters. we see many angles and they help us to understand things such as why nora is so defiant to gustav, why gustav seems so disassociated from the present and why agnes, despite her life of what seems to be stability, veils her feelings of heartbreak and loneliness, desiring her relationships with her father and sister to be mended. we also have an amazing performance from elle fanning, although she has no emotional connection with the borg family, she really acts her ‘actress’ role phenomenally. i love the rawness of emotion within this film, and it is accompanied with many beautiful and warm moments. this film made me very happy inside.
