Sunset Boulevard
“You see, this is my life. It always will be. There’s nothing else- just us and the cameras and those wonderful people out there in the dark”.
What can I say that hasn’t been said before about this movie? It oozes excellence, it simply does. One of cinema’s greatest masterpieces that gets better with the passing of the years. I watched this for the first time when I was 17 and it blew me away. Now 7 years latter it still amazes me like it was the first time watching it. I cried with the last scene, it was so powerful. I adore everything about this movie, the wonderful photography, the masterful direction, the superb script, the out of the world performances, even the romantic subplot works so well I wish Holden and Olson had more screen time together. This movie has everything I like: a gothic feel to it, some melodramatic flare, a dark vision of the world, a meta commentary about movie making itself. It’s just so so wonderful. God bless Billy Wilder and everyone involved in it.
