The odyssey is perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year, maybe of the decade, and it kinda meets the expectations set. The visuals were stunning. I’m truly glad this was my first experience in a proper IMAX theatre. Every scene where they were sailing simply looked amazing, and the shots of Odysseus in the desert-like area with Calypso and Athena were simply breathtaking. The music was absolutely phenomenal too. Probably not on the same level as Oppenheimer, but the siren and the pluck of the bowstring gave me chills. Most of the time, the sound was reverberating through my body, sounding almost like my heartbeat. Truly an unreal feeling. The last hour and a half of the movie was incredibly intriguing, and I probably blinked twice the entire time. The sequence where the suitors compete for marriage, and Odysseus plucking the bowstring to show that he’s giving the suitors a chance to run before he ultimately kills them was exceptional. However, the film certainly has a few flaws. The main one being the performances. Anna Hathaway’s performance was likely the strongest in the entire movie despite her short screen time. Matt Damon was unfortunately not too convincing as Odysseus, somebody like DiCaprio or Bale would’ve likely been a better choice. He wears the same expression nearly the entire movie. Tom Holland as Telemachus didn’t seem to be the greatest choice from the bits I’d read from the book. Zendaya was surprisingly decent as Athena. The other main issue was the pacing of the movie. The non linear storytelling in the movie was actually quite a good take on the story, and wasn’t unbearably confusing, but the first act of the movie was too slow, whereas the second and third act were too fast. There wasn’t enough time to truly appreciate the world and its characters outside Odysseus, which is crucial to good adaptation. The movie would’ve been one of the greatest of all time if it had been made in two parts, to flesh out the world building and the characters as Homer intended. Overall it was an amazing experience, but not without its flaws. Certainly warrants a rewatch in a different format to see whether the difference is colossal. Certainly an enjoyable film, but not as generational as some make it out to be.

Certainly a theatre experience, preferably first day. The plot was extremely convoluted and tried to incorporate too many ideas vaguely without focusing on a single one and exploring it in depth. You can almost tell this movie was supposed to release before the elections when he promotes a lot of ideals and talks about change, and some of them feel quite forced. Also can’t forget the very blatant AI usage during a certain flashback which pissed me off because it’s one of Tamil cinemas most celebrated actors’ farewell and they couldn’t care less about using AI. However, Vijay is probably the only one who wouldn’t get shit on for doing a role like this, and nobody else probably gets their audience to scream enough to shake the theatre.

Slightly underwhelming from all the hype. Mostly seen people praising Navarrette’s performance as Nikki and I completely agree, definitely a rising talent. Great horror, not the ghost scary type, but the one that makes you really uncomfortable. A lot of what happened in the movie really makes you wonder how Bear acted slightly awkwardly to most of the things Nikki pulled and let it slide. Also the hospital scene where the lady didn’t admit Nikki into the hospital? Overall a decent film but weird inconsistencies

There’s evil, and then there’s General Mireau.
