Godzilla Minus One
one of the best war movie i’ve ever seen and EASILY the best monster movie.
it’s incredible how the movie isn’t so much about godzilla itself, it’s about humans, it’s about war and how so many lives have been and are shattered by it. it’s about humanity.
seeing so many people still fighting the ghosts of a previous war, but willing to risk it all once again truly was heart wrenching. noboby had to do it, and no one would blame them if they just gave up. yet most of them hope more than ever.
shikishima was an INSANELY good character. my heart sunk everytime he blamed himself over his past actions. all he did was survive. and like noriko said it: he had to survive. i’m so glad he did.
i love more than anything that he wasn’t ready to die back then because he had no one’s future in particular to save. it was only when he had this new life and akiko that he was ready to die, for her future. revenge or duty were never enough of a reason but love was. to die for akiko was something shikishima was capable of but to live and see her grow was what he wanted. when tachibana gave him the option to still live, granting him at the same time a feeling of an even deeper redemption, it freed him from the burden of what was the war to him: grief and resentment.
this is an excellent movie about war, love and loss and, more than anything, hope. i didn’t expect that from a godzilla movie, it was too amazing.
also, the end with the reveal of noriko’s survival almost made me tear up.
i might have wished that godzilla hadn’t made a comeback at the end but hey, it’s godzilla, and i’ll EAT the next movie. tho, i expect a lot from it since it was an amazing ending already.
