Midsommar
no way, the start immediately reminded me of Hereditary, only to find out it’s the same director💀 i thought me and Ari Aster were going to have a problem, where i felt like i wasted my time again, but Midsommar kept me way more intrigued than i thought
there are spoilers btw if you haven’t watched it haha
mark losing his mind over it being bright outside at 9pm was funny asf😭 and i think the film does such a good job using the summer setting, flowers, and swedish language to its advantage. as the audience, we don’t understand the language or customs, and that unfamiliarity paired with the ost creates so much uneasiness. it really plays on how humans are naturally drawn to and disturbed by the unknown, which i think Ari did well with this film
the visuals and shots, like close ups on the murals or tapestries, or people staring directly at the camera, felt like constant foreshadowing, which paid off later and made everything more unsettling. then everything just escalated so quickly but casually at the same time. josh getting hit out of nowhere💀 some random wearing mark’s face💀 dani becoming may queen💀
despite how ridiculously weird it is, the film never felt pointless or like it lost itself, which was my main issue with Hereditary. it explores so many themes too - grief, manipulation, belonging, betrayal, the list goes on honestly. christian though… he genuinely got hoe’d😭 bro just wanted to do his thesis but instead got set up just to die😭 had a girl who was mentally unstable, whack friends, emotions manipulated to make him cheat; then impregnate another woman, and then ended up paralysed, stuffed in a bear, and burned alive…😭
and after all of that… dani smiling at the end. insane. disturbing. weirdly earned. Ari Aster, you are one strange guy, but i’ll give it to you. this one worked
