Past Lives
wow. it explored how no matter where life takes you whether that is work, studying, distance, or time the need to love and be loved always outweighs everything else. you can convince yourself that ambition or money matters more but this film quietly shows how love is what we subconsciously chase even when we are not looking for it
the pacing is calm without ever feeling slow giving the film an almost dreamlike feel. the contrast between countries/languages, the use of colour and framing, and even weather, they all felt like it was communicating the emotions without the need of words. the concept of in-yun is beautiful, the idea that even the smallest moments of connection carry meaning across lifetimes
and all three characters were proof of this. they all experienced happiness and sadness at different points and it never feels forced, just human. Arthur saying
you make my world so much bigger and i am wondering if i do the same for you
perfectly captures how much reassurance matters and how fragile it can be. even the awkwardness between the three is funny and oddly cute reminding us that adulthood does not erase our childhood selves
what truly sets this film apart for me is its ending. so many films feel the need to be conclusive. but Celine Song instead subtly reflects on the idea of in-yun again, that connections do not simply end they continue
and the ending is emotional because it is real. sometimes sacrifices are made even when you do not want things to end. this film felt like another reminder for me on how, life is enjoyable and painful at the same time and this film chefs kiss depicts this very well
