There is so much beauty and story in routine life — Alfonso Cuarón’s masterful direction of one-takes and immaculate cinematography in b&w pulls through so much of that, and paints a heartfelt picture through the eyes of Cleo. The atmospheric sounds of marching bands, noisy kids, car engines, gunshots and aeroplanes do the film’s setting far more justice than any score of music could ever do. It’s an astounding slow burner but it’ll hold you firm throughout.
