I just watched an entire miniseries dedicated to following the presidential campaign of a politician who doesn’t exist, and it was really fascinating. Robert Altman’s direction is genius and the actors go above and beyond, making it hard to tell what’s real and what isn’t. The episode intros on the Criterion Collection DVD make it even harder to tell, because the actors give new interviews in character talking about the things that happened in the previous episode. I did find it a little hard to follow sometimes. It feels like Altman sort of gave up on making a mockumentary a few episodes in and just made a regular fiction series (although the visual style didn’t really change). That doesn’t change the fact that it was a fascinating watch. For the first Criterion DVD that I actually went out of my way to buy (I usually only buy Blu-ray) I think it was worth it.
