Annette
**SO MAY WE START ?
**
After waiting for the release of Annette on the internet for almost 6 months and writing countless emails to the Cannes Film festival so they could provide me with a screener, I finally watched Annette last night
In a nutshell
Leos Carax's 2021 feature Annette feels like a rollercoaster inside an opera where everyone is high as fuck
I went in with very low expectations due to the reviews being not what I thought they would be and scared to see yet another Leos carax film whose potential has been halted by the poor screenwriting
The story and screenplay were written by the sparks brothers (Ron and Russell Mael) who are a prominent name in the music industry. Their writing paved the way for Leos to go full out with his twisted and chronic vision and I'm very thankful for the sparks brothers to do so
This is a musical in a true sense as there are about 2 lines in the entire film which are not sung by the actors and holds up to the title of a "Rock Opera"
The soundtrack was absolutely mental
Which is good as it aligned well with the Carax vision ( a few tracks that I still haven't stopped listening on repeat are) -:
1. We love each other so much
2. All the girls
3. You used to laugh
4. Girl from nowhere
The perfomances shined to the limit.
Adam driver gives the performance of the century as an eccentric stand up comic and Marion cotliard blesses the screen with her pleasent singing and wonderful acting in her opera scenes in the film. Simon Helberg who is a silver screen alumni hailing from the world of big bang theory absolutely transforms into the role of the secretive and supportive CONDUCTOR
Visually the film was a pure desert to look at with the prominent green used throughout the film 💚
Annette is most definitely a heavyweight contender for the awards season next year and it would be absolutely shocking if it doesn't win it all.
To conclude
Annette is a Rock Opera done right .
The combination of the minds of Leos carax and the sparks brother was soo pure and out of this world that they might even give this film a paragraph in the cinema history books as well.
Brilliant in every sense 💚
