The World at War
It's very lengthy, but the sheer amount of footage in this is insane. Who even filmed all this? How did they collect all this footage? And they even did foley and added sound effects on! A huge achievement in documentary film making, and to think the incredible editors here were mostly new to editing, and barely did anything since. So many little scenes that told a story without a word being said. I just can't wrap my head around how these people who captured all this managed to get so much high quality footage with perfect cinematography, almost as it's directed for the sole purpose of this very documentary. The D-day episode being a highlight, which almost played out as a thriller movie on its own.
Amazing narration and very engaging interviews - they even got interviews of people being either directly involved or being second hand to the higher ups, like secretary to the painter himself, etc. And James Stewart appeared out of nowhere??
While that being said, I feel it's a too long in places it shouldn't. There's episodes where they have to stick to one event/country/theme, but they clearly have much less archive footage to fill the hour. Some episodes rush things a bit too fast, and it's a bit difficult to follow along as they rarely used graphics, and never(?) used title cards to help us follow along.
And dead bodies. So many dead bodies. Humans, animals, men, women.. kids.. completely uncensored...
