“*What do you love about music”*
“To begin with…everything”
when i was young i would be woken on Sunday mornings to the sounds of cat stevens and Fleetwood mac, my fathers records would play as he mopped the floor of the kitchen. years later when i was 13 or so, i found myself digging through the junk drawers and cabinets, and there, between broken toys and empty photo albums i had found a stack of burnt cds, one labeled "Simon and Garfunkel vol 2" took my fancy and as i played it in the car radio, the only cd player that we had left, i became a sponge for the gentle drums and guitar that moved out from the little plastic disk. Simon and Garfunkel then became the definitive sound of music in my mind . two years later i bought my first record player, one of the cheap foldable ones with its own speaker, i raided my grandparents sitting room and took home records of Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, i received a record every year from my father than on. one year i was gifted a copy of David Bowie's greatest hits from a friend, and Bowie then joined Simon and Garfunkel in my mind as the definitive sound of music. as i grew older i fell in love again and again with all types of sound. with all types of music, Fleetwood mac, R.E.M, Bowie, The Cranberries, The Smiths, Clapton, Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Joan Baez. I became a museum, a containment of harmonic resonance. now at 21, i cannot imagine a life without music. Coltrane, Aretha franklin, Springsteen, Etta James, Bob Dylan, geese. these are the artists in my current Spotify rotation, now in 2026 music, movies, books, paintings, any form of art is becoming ever more accessible. in 1973 this was not the case however, touring, radio shows, magazines, and physical media was how you interacted with these art forms, you would walk to the record store, or the cinema, or the book shop and youd dig and scower through piles and stacks of art work and walk out with something in hand. that was 53 years ago, 60,000 years ago in now what is known as Slovenia, Neanderthals hollowed out bones and used them as flutes. I will age and grow old, music will not, music is young, it is timeless, it is a declaration of humanity. it is a way to connect to those around us. music is a human right. without dancing, without singing, without making sounds from taut pieces of string and canvas. We wouldn't be around for some 300,000 years.
great film btw
