Cronos
I can see the manifestation of Guillermo's lifelong obsession with Frankenstein through the protagonist, Jesus Gris, when he discovered the power of Cronos device and transformed into a vampire-adjacent monster but endures such vulnerability, especially towards his granddaughter, Aurora. Their tender relationship is the emotional core that ground the madness in this movie.
Cronos marks Guillermo Del Toro's directorial debut, oddball, yet delightful horror entry. The plot is a bit pulpy and frankly camp, but settles into the aesthetic that defines his filmography's style, particularly that catholic gothic regurgitated through the grotesque. And Ron Perlman adds a classic brutish proportion as the villain in it. Absolutely kinetic.
