Hellboy
"If there is trouble all us freaks have is each other"
I haven't read the comics, yet I just know of them. Prologue makes the orgin story very simple and I like it.
Various characters are definitely the best thing about it, there are: firestarter, "Abe" sapien, profesor Broom aka father who stepped in and titular Hellboy. Ron Perlman is such perfect casting here. The leather coat and the cigar look goes so hard. It's one of those where practical effects looks too good and CGI is worse...
Plot is somewhat interesting, but not enough to make me invested. However the romance angle, being similar to Orpheus and Eurydice is awesome. Obviously you can't go wrong with punching Nazis and Cthulhu.
Humor and supernatural stuff are in perfect balance here. There are silly nicknames as well as prophecy about the apocalypse. World-bulding is great and everything is appearing, makes me want to learn more about that universe.
All in all it's solid, not sure how it translates to adaptation. However it's well crafted and fun to watch. I found version with extra 15 minutes, so there is that too...
Doug Jones being amphibian man trice is something to think about...
