The Devil's Backbone
"What is a ghost (...)?"
So much dept and symbolism in simple tale about ghost, greed and system rotten by the war.
The water is the titular devil's backbone, and while is still a essential to live it makes full circle to death. The gold is only thing making the prosthetic leg work and it's the greed, that consumes all men besides friendly doctor. Golden "rings" is real treasure all along. Ghost and monologue about it also makes a full circle making a great twist and that team-up was incredible.
Foreshadowing is subtle, but it's there especially with the scene of retrieving more water. War is very present here not as much as in "Pan's labyrinth", but with the planes falling from the sky and entire existence of the orphanage makes it clear.
Cinematography is stunning, plenty of shots reminded me of "The searchers". The long shots of the dessert and siluettes over the windows especially. Rest is mostly in the dark and shadows as any mystery and horror do.
Jacinto was a horrible person, but that look with tank top, suspenders and bandana especially beaten up....yeah.
I'm slowly making my way through Guillermo del Toro movies and this one is definitely one of my favorites.
I feel a bit devastated right now...
