World on a Wire
"Are you sure you have a real cigarette? Or an idea of the cigarette?"
I was a bit sceptical at the beginning, because story adapts slowly. However once you get into it, you can see why it's so visually good and influenced so much...
It's crazy how this is just some book adaptation, that preceeds "Matrix", "eXisTenZ", "Dark city" and even "ghost in the shell". The idea of stimulation is frequently shown by different mirrors and screens in "part 1", and with lines in "part 2". It's a visualization of parallel world and idea of unknown reality. Even one corridor shot was a bit like "inception" or "paprika".
First "episode" feels more mystery filled noir, while the second is more of cyberpunk on the run. Very reminiscent of "blade runner", in this case I'm not sure if this was first, or entire Moebius influence on modern sci-fi.
So many stunning costumes and great retro-futurstic furniture and machines in it. Those helmets are still huge element of visiting parallel worlds. Ending is more of loosing grip on reality, which is also connected to end of the world on 31st of May.
This really stood up the test of time and it's a proper piece of sci-fi. I admit it's a bit lengthy, but plot makes it worth it. For my first Fassbinder feature, this is real good.
Although this shouldn't be called series, this is the series the same way Hopper's "Salem's lot" is...
