The Clock
I watched from 3:35 to 4:15pm, or the minimum for a film to be considered a feature.
I finally saw it.
My cousin had invited me into the big city - New York City - for a stage show. We had some time to kill, I realized, and I had heard this was going to be looping at the MOMA, not too far from where the stage show was going to be. I explained what I was thinking and asked if we could go see even a chunk of it.
“Sure,” he said.
So I got to see a chunk of an elusive film. Even forty minutes was enough for me to see the vision and meaning behind Marclay’s piece. The Clock is extraordinary both in concept and execution; the editing is so tight I’m astonished at how seamless it goes from a film made twenty years ago to a film made seventy. Even the sound editing is phenomenal; every effort made in this production was well spent in its creation. Time passes and you don’t even process it the way you normally process time passing. We come back and forth to scenes we may never see again; it’s as if you’re watching the whole world.
You must see it if you get a chance. I know I want to go again.
