Funny Games
Tom & Jerry + a bit of the old ultra violence
One of those movies that really just makes you feel unsafe in your home. I know I’m a sucker for suspense, but damn. Some of these single still shot scenes, lasting minutes long, really stick with you. It’s one of those movies where if you are not 100% invested, you will be bored. But I think that the psychopathic lightheartedness of the antagonists has so much depth to it. The family is literally fighting for their lives and these guys over hear are just screwing around as if they’ve got nothing better to do. Seriously twisted.
Summer: A family goes away to their house in the cape for the summer and they’re greeted by their neighbor who introduces them to these two strange boys wearing all white. The boys return not too long later asking for eggs, quickly take the family hostage, and decide they want to play a game. You realize that everything up to this point in the movie was of their planning. The. the kids torment the family for the rest of the movie and yadda yadda yadda. You just gotta watch it. In the end, after all the build-up, the final surviving lady is just casually drowned in the water. And they go to the next neighbors to do it again… spooky.
critical appraisal: As I said earlier, it’s not a light watch and can be boring if your not invested. I liked it so much because it is one of those movies that make you feel things: emotions, thoughts, discussions. It’s a very stimulating movie, but the cinematic style isn’t for everyone and can even draw away from the movie at times. I really liked the long shots though. I feel like it left me with time to think about what was happening: are the bad guys coming back? what will they do now? was this on purpose?
Generally, I would watch again, and I think that a second watch could even be better than my first. It was recommended from a friend as one of their favorites, and I understand why. Not to sound pretentious, but if you’re not really willing to watch and think about a movie, you probably won’t feel the same way as I about this. Regardless, I’d give it a shot.
