Mickey 17
A man down in his luck decides to commit suicide over and over.
Summary: Exploring social and psychological conflicts of death and the material value of artificial life, this movie presents a dystopian future where Mickey signs up as a “expendable” where he will go in life threatening missions and experimental procedures with the assurance that he can be printed back out with the same body and consciousness. Is it the same consciousness or is it a copy seemingly the same to the outside world? That is what my mind went to when there was an instance of duplicates and Mickey finally realizes that he doesn’t just get reborn. It is these events that lead to reformation of the universal legislation and overcoming the corrupt leadership (Mark Rufallo).
Some criticisms, I love the film but wish that they explored the alien species deeper. They open the door but their significance is boiled down to just “the value of life,” and in the end the relationship seems somewhat superficial. It’s also hard because, although I like the gimmick of Rufalo’s character, he doesn’t quite provide the depth that I feel is necessary for proper conflict between Mickey and the Aliens. His character is very static, and it leads to Mickeys conflict with him only being possible through the presence of the Alien issue, although his corrupt leadership is t directly problematic because of this decision but rather the other issues present. It feels like a workaround in a sense.
Still quite a good movie, and I would watch again. Overall I think that this movie has such a unique feel to it, and I hope to see for gritty, anxiety-ridden films like this in the future.
