Berlin Alexanderplatz
i couldn’t possibly wrap my whole head around this after watching it all literally once but even if you don’t include that epilogue this is one of his most visually stunning works, everything dressed in this brass and brown where the vomit across someone’s chest glistens the same as jewelry. it’s so beautiful to look at
but like i said, the frantic end-of-life epilogue with bondage abattoirs and velvet underground and bombs going off in the garden of earthly delights and frantic swapping of roles among franz and all the people he has abused and loved is really what it’s all about, to me. you see a lineage to something like Jarman’s Edward II but also The Sopranos
(thought for the longest time this was intended to be viewed in one 16 hr sitting but didn’t know it was basically a miniseries with the same credit sequence throughout - so like if the same misconception is keeping you from tackling it i def recommend)
