Mr. Scorsese
I will eat these kinds of chronological-through-their-filmography docs every single time even when they largely feel like surface level greatest hits. Not bad by any stretch just kinda basic. Seeing Isabella Rossellini made me really wish she directed this because she actually has a personality unlike this filmmaker, whose deepest probing questions include “it seems like Rupert pupkin and Travis bickle are two sides of the same coin.” Mostly just observations we’ve heard a million times. But seeing the footage of the religious right losing their fucking minds about The Last Temptation of Christ rocked.
Spends a lot of the runtime spoon feeding the viewer “depiction is not endorsement” and then uses The Age of Innocence to briefly be like “see! He’s not just a mob movie maker!” without spending a more significant time on it arguably being his best movie. The same goes for After Hours, Bringing Out the Dead, Silence, and Killers of the Flower Moon tbh just treated like total footnotes which I get in terms of runtime but it’s on Apple TV like fuck a runtime!
Would’ve loved to see Lorraine Bracco, Lily Gladstone, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bernhard, Willem Dafoe, or Nicolas Cage. Or more music from his movies that isn’t The Rolling Stones. No mention of Bernard Herrmann Taxi Driver score. Killers of the Flower Moon is used as like a footnote to show he’s still making movies with the same passion instead of it being part of this Silence+Irishman period of also arguably some of his best, most human, most existentially masochistic work. I dunno man I definitely still loved to watch it but I wish it was made better! I wanna hear Thelma Schoonmaker talk for a whole doc.
