Jaws
This is my perfect monster movie, the one that defeats all the others in my opinion. It does everything right from capturing the fear of shark in the beginning of the movie by using three distinctive things; actor, composer and composition and it does it all pretty well which in turn creates other scenes even more thrilling.
Not seeing the shark for most of movie creates such tension because you know what’s out there and the implications of it’s existence and yet it is dragged out by the over-arching narrative around the characters in the movie. This still manages to spook me, I swear I had a moment where my popcorn came flying out because of the jump-scare. It really does hold up in the modern-viewing experience.
The acting is incredible but nothing is quite like that USS Indianapolis monologue which is performed and directed so beautifully with reactive silence and mood shift at the start to the harrowing end, super intense in my opinion.
A spectacle quite deserving of it’s praise.
