Eternity
Going into this I said well the choice is pretty cristal clear; of course the one who she spent 65 years married to and had kids and grandchildren with and grew old with.
To me, she was a completely different person in each. Luke was her great first love that ended tragically too soon and Larry was her soulmate, he always had the best intentions and wanted to make her happy. But, no matter what she still is in love with them both. No matter how much time she was with each she made a commitment to them. Joan was really put in an impossible situation and I also predicted that she’d go without neither.
I was told to take pictures of myself if I cried but to me this wasn’t a crying film. I’ve seen my fair share of tragic movies so I thought I’d be pretty numb to this. But, when Larry ran after her and told her to be with Luke and gave that amazing speech that showed truly who he was (the man that tried to do anything to make her happy) I completely lost it. And I didn’t really stop crying after that. Everyone probably can get emotional for many different reasons during this film: some have experienced this kind of grief before, they have the same thought process as some of the characters, among others. To me, that scene just made me realize how much I really want to have a great love like that, someone who would put me before them and who’d do anything to make me happy even if they wouldn’t get to be there to see it. It just made me a mess.
Then it was so sad to see her realize that for that reason she couldn’t stay with Luke and of course you feel horrible for him. He waited 67 years and now is stuck in an eternity in a place she loves without her. And yes he didn’t like her talking about her kids and grandkids but I understood that it just hurt him to see that he didn’t get to have that life with her. And her going back every night to see her life with Larry must’ve hurt him as well (it hurt me pretty badly).
It’s hard when there isn’t anyone to blame or a clear side to take, no one here is a villain. This was a beautifully made film. I laughed, freaked out and bawled. I loved how colorful it was as well and how the movie delt with different believes of what the afterlife is. And I just hope that I get to experience the love Joan felt in her life (or at least make it to no man land).
