Vagabond
There is nothing worse than being lost and alone, both physically and mentally.
*“Tu as la liberté totale. Tu choisis, mais tu as la solitude totale.
Il vient un moment où si on continue, on se détruit.
On va à la destruction.” *
Agnès Varda really captures that haunting feeling of emptiness and sheer solitude we all face at some point in our lives, whether forced on us or by cause of our own doing –our bad decisions and self-destructive tendencies. For Mona, that’s the case. Prioritising freedom to the extent of losing comfort, clarity and health. Pushing everyone away – even those that offer help – all to remain free. Although, Varda depicts the crueler side of freedom – one that is bleak and full of struggle.
And even with her stubborn, rebellious behaviour, we cannot help but feel this pitiful sadness for Mona as she takes us with her through her journey, going from job to job, from person to person. With no fixed aim or aspiration. Just a collection of fleeting moments that eventually lead to her sorrowful death.
This was a heartbreaking watch.
