Oldboy
I’ve never seen a revenge film end like this before. I don’t even know if I should feel angry, afraid, sad, numb or all of the above. I’ve been trying to process it for days now.
“You’ve been asking the wrong question. It’s not why you kept me locked up for 15 years you should’ve been asking why you released me after 15 years,” Woo-jin said.
At that moment, I realized that the central figure in this story isn’t Dae-su it’s Woo-jin. When the truth is finally revealed, the scene where Dae-su cuts off his tongue shows that he understands the damage he caused. The rumor he spread about Woo-jin and his sister was deeply harmful, leaving permanent scars, even though he never intended for it to go that far. From a threaten man to pleading and begging for mercy.
After truths unveil, Woo-jin entered the elevator, his mind finally cleared up realizing his 15 years of revenge for his sister has been fulfill, But for so long that was Woo-jin only life purpose, even though jobs is finish the sorrow in him didn't leave after those years and it finally hits him, he realized that he couldn't live without his sister while also blaming himself for letting go of her hand on that boat, so he ended himself while the sound of Dae-su and Mi-do having intimacy echoing through the apartment.
While Woo-jin left everything behind, Dae-su kept living, distracting himself to avoid remembering this tragic event. Moving forward, the story jumps to the future with Dae-su and his hypnotherapist (the same Woo-jin delinquent who caused Dae-su and Mi-do to develop feelings for each other).
“When I ring the bell, it’ll split you into two people: one who doesn’t know the secret, and a monster who knows all the secrets. When I ring the bell, the monster will turn around and start walking,” the hypnotherapist said, as the movie paneling Dae-su walked toward Mi-do after she found him outside in the snow indicating he’s imitating the monster’s footsteps.
Looking forward to find more gems like this in the future.
