Spirited Away
my most beloved comfort film; one that is so precious to me, and only becomes more personal, more beautiful, more perplexing with every passing season. with every rewatch i am reminded of the little girl i was when this first aired on my family’s television, and the nostalgia envelops me like a tight hug back home
i adore spirited away’s soundtrack, colors, unconventional story, and strong-willed protagonist chihiro so much (in addition to our other colorful and expressive characters who make the storyline more rich and layered, like haku, lin, zeniba, and even our fun soot sprites). most of all, when i need the courage to return to the most vulnerable, honest, genuine parts of myself, i watch spirited away (or at the very least let it hum softly in the background). so much is to be said about even just the first few minutes, which always direct me to exactly where i need to be.
the film’s opening sequence, featuring chihiro’s goodbye flowers and the monologue between her and her parents as they drive away to their unnamed new home, fill me with a familiar bittersweetness that can only be associated with saying goodbye
>to finish later.. too much to say about my most loved film
