Columbus
* "i'm also moved by it"
"yes! yes, tell me about that: what moves you?" *
there's something about films that tackle passion, love, attention. it's why that line from lady bird that conflates attention and love as the same is something that sticks with me throughout this day.
passion feels like such a broad topic to get into. how do you come upon your passion? how can you claim that it is truly that? and this extends to what you like. so many facets go into these decisions, so many factors that pull you in one direction and then push you to the other. it's scary to not know, or to feel like you know but are so unsure about it.
columbus feels like a hug that reassures you of what you know, that what you dedicate time to, what makes up the space in your thoughts, is something worth taking the leap for.
jin and casey act as the perfect duo (elevated by such wonderful performances from cho and richardson) for the job to reflect on what we love, what we want, and what we feel passionate about. both act as foils to one another which eventually leads them to a resolution that i find comforting and tender.
koganada puts so much care into this film with shots that shows the city of columbus, indiana to be living and breathing, reflecting the love and care that was present in the creation of many of the buildings showcased. the monotony present in the film allows for the city to shine from its serene and tranquil landscapes to the soft glows of streetlamps and headlights.
a much needed rewatch is in order and i cant wait to revisit this.
