Amadeus
my eighth perfect 10
wow. I love how unique the story is told, from the perspective of a jealous rival of Mozart. It’s more about envy, genius and obsession rather than just music. I love how the ability for mediocrity to recognise brilliance is a central theme and question raised. F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce, as Salieri and Mozart respectively, offer some of the most memorable performances I’ve ever seen. The costumes, set and cinematography are stunning, recreating 18th century Vienna with luxuriance. The use of Mozart’s music into the soundtrack is perfectly integrated into the emotional arc of the film.
I don't think it could’ve ended on a more perfect line; “Mediocrities everywhere… I absolve you.” It’s bitter, ironic, tragic. Salieri’s spent his life consumed by jealously, and now, completely broken, he tries to find purpose in being the voice of the unexceptional. It’s a darkly funny, deeply human ending.
