Shin Godzilla
Watched the Orthograph cut, fuckin sick as hell.
Before watching this I read a book that focused heavily on the evolution of communication and cooperation. It was really good right up until the end, when it suddenly turned on its own point. The author started railing against collectivist societies, claiming they had more corruption, and argued that what she called "universalist" (individualist) societies were better. And of course, being British, the argument ultimately tracked with where she was coming from.
I bring this up because there’s something so poignant about how Anno depicts the pitfalls of the collectivist culture he grew up in, while also tearing into the obvious faults of the individualist, lets nuke Godzilla without caring for anyone in its wake, mindset of the West, and specifically America. It might take a village to figure it out and get shit done, but when it’s done collectively, it’s done for the good of the whole.
