Midnight in Paris
Just watched this movie.
Perhaps my emotions are too raw for a review right now, but truly-this is the most remarkable movie i have ever watched.
I suppose the setting of a film, the constant nostalgia portrayed, somehow calls out to me. The main character-Gil-also represents me, since i am a writer/poet with a deep want to live in a different era. Seeing him on a screen felt like magic-i’ve never thought people like this existed.
The love story, or, shall i say-stories, are incredibly realistic-with the usual uncertainty and conflict that Gil has.
The actors did a splendid job. I especially loved the performance of Corey Stoll as Ernest Hemingway. I was amazed by the involvement, yet, at the same time-the nonchalance for the character. I loved the dialogue in the car, on the second night of Gil in 1920’s-when Ernest makes a metaphor about fear of death and love. The way he says these things-it’s visible that he truly believes in what he says. I forgot, for a second, that this was a movie-and that dialogue was a script, which people were told to play. Because i really believed that this was Ernest himself, meaning every single word the said, yet not having an idea he just said something such brilliant.
And of course-the aesthetic. I don’t know if it was supposed to be like this-but the coloring in 2010 is warm, bright, when the coloring in 1920’s is even warmer, more grounded and somehow more comfortable (i don’t think i can explain this better). The second coloring feels more like home, comfort and coziness-which represents Gil’s want to live in that era. Although maybe this is me making things up.
Overall, i am sure this movie will, from now on-stand among my favourite movies of all time.
