Aftersun
this one lowkey broke me, not even gonna lie. nothing “big” really happens, but somehow it hits harder than most movies. it’s just a dad and his daughter on a holiday, vibing, joking around, doing normal stuff… but there’s this quiet sadness sitting in the background the whole time.
paul mescal as calum? man… the way he plays someone who’s trying so hard to be a good dad while clearly fighting his own demons is crazy subtle. like you can see the cracks even when he’s smiling.
and sophie looking back at those memories later just makes everything hurt more. it’s like realizing that when you’re a kid you don’t notice the heavy stuff adults are carrying.
the last scenes? yeah… emotionally violated.
soft, nostalgic, and painfully real. this film doesn’t scream, it just whispers and somehow that makes it way sadder.
