Patrick Melrose
My Thoughts on the Series
I've just finished watching this series and really enjoyed it. It's exceptionally well-made, with top-notch aesthetics and absolutely brilliant acting.
Direction: 9/10
The series is both heavy to watch—as it deals with tough themes like addiction and domestic violence—and surprisingly light at the same time. It's not overly gloomy (at least not all the time, there's some dynamism) and even quite colorful in places. The first episode stands out the most in terms of direction—it's packed with creativity—but the other episodes also impressed with their cinematic techniques. The only thing I didn't quite get was the lizard comparison and where it ultimately led, but oh well.
Plot: 8/10
The story is fairly straightforward—it's about an aristocrat struggling with drug addiction and a difficult childhood. It's based on a book (or book series). Everything is clear and easy to follow, except for the final episode, which I might have skimmed through a bit too quickly (I did fast-forward a little toward the end, but no big deal). Also, the last episode introduced some characters who didn't really go anywhere, which was a bit confusing—otherwise, it was great.
Acting (Especially Cumberbatch): 10/10
This is where the series truly shines. Ben was absolutely phenomenal—100/10. Honestly, all the actors were great, though the woman who played the mother was the least impressive to me.
Final verdict: 9/10—very, very good, lovely.
