Raw
31 Days of Horror #17 out of 31
“I’m Sure You’ll Figure it Out Honey”
Julia Ducournau’s “Raw” was the first foreign film I ever watched, I likely could’ve picked something less intense, provocative, and straight up horrifying, but I didn’t, and I have to say that if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t nearly be as open to watch foreign films as I am now.
Raw opened my eyes in a weird way and re-kickstarted my love of Horror movies that had been long dead for quite a while. And without this film, I truthfully wouldn’t be the movie nerd I am today, I found it at a weird time, and it ended up being just what I needed.
It’s almost shocking just how perfect this movie is as a whole, from the unsettling opening sequence, to the final shot of the movie, it’s meticulously executed, and expertly played out, the atmosphere, crafted perfectly by Ducournau, keeps every shot engaging, with every element grabbing you from the very beginning and keeping its hold long after the credits roll.
And not to mention the MVP of the whole film, Garance Marillier, who plays Justine to absolute perfection, and truthfully delivers one of the best performances in a film I’ve ever seen, the evolution of her character is sheer brutal brilliance.
It’s a shame so many Americans just refuse to read subtitles, and view films in other languages as lesser. Because through their ignorance, they choose to ignore some of the greatest stories, and greatest films ever made. Raw is a film that needs to be viewed by everyone, it’s an excellent example of how to tell a story. And an undeniable masterpiece of cinema.
