“When I finally came in, Debbie was home from work, and I told her everything about my dinner with Andre.” I can hardly believe that he did. Too much to tell. Nor can I believe that Wallace Shawn the character was changed significantly by the experience of that evening (but in the fleeting moments thereafter). Wallace Shawn the character probably did not reflect much on that dinner in the months and years that followed (though he remembered it well and often recounted it to others, believing it to have been affecting). But undeniably he was the better for it. For there was that night a brief connection, albeit with a semi-solipsistic atypical man; there was that spark of life.
