Sinners
a love letter to black culture and the key role music has had and continues to have from generation to generation. the symbolism is excellently done; the variety of topics covered are immense and show the importance of recognizing horror as a legitimate genre with power behind the jump scares, bloodbaths, and screams. the purposeful inclusion of the misuse of power and continuation of enslaved labor can be seen in the brief but purposeful mention of the incarceration system and it’s disproportionate effect on black people. the casting was fantastically done (shocking to no one like look at all of their resumes) and the cinematography and costume design encapsulates the time period and leaves much for viewers to discover during later watched.
