Dogville
I was cheering for her to get a gun and then… Atta girl!!
———
The whole setting almost feels like Grace is some sort of fallen angel in a purgatory-like world, deciding whether these people deserve to live or not.
She’s incredibly naive, almost as if she’s never been exposed to the world before, and she tries so hard to stay in everyone’s good graces (pun intended) to give them a chance.
Everything feels off from the start. Why is Grace treated as though she’s fundamentally different from them? Why does she need a two-week probation period before Dogville decides whether she can stay?
Despite suffering months of abuse, Grace’s purity and naivety are only truly corrupted when her father shows up: a reminder of the power she could use over them at any moment. And when she does it’s done in a instant « Dictum ac factum » as written on the mine’s entrance.
I’d even theorize that she wasn’t fleeing anything in the first place. She may have gone there knowing exactly what she wanted to test, and how to test it: by being the kindest person imaginable, only for them to still ruin her, and, in doing so, destroy their own chance at survival.
