I had a lot of thoughts on this movie prior to even seeing it due to all of the discourse, but went into it with as much of an open mind as possible to give it as much of a fair chance. before even getting into anything, shoutout to the girls behind my friend and I who audibly ripped ass twice, had their bare toes out next to my friend, and made me genuinely debate holding up my phone with “put your toes away ?” typed up on a black Snapchat screen lmfao. thoughts and observations after viewing: - immediately going to go purchase a copy of wuthering heights to fully read the story!!! - everybody hypes emerald fennell up for having such an eye for shots and such pretty aesthetics in her movies. I gave her credit for that in saltburn, but after seeing saltburn multiple times and now wuthering heights, I felt like she was not innovative in her compositions? everything is very front and center shot. it felt lackluster in a way? - for charli xcx making the soundtrack (and I love love love charli AND the soundtrack she made), only two of the actual songs are used in the movie, and then they just recycled the instrumental of “house” for a good majority and that was it? - it was not NEARLY as slutty as everybody emphasized it would be in the press for it. no nudity at all. it’s almost like emerald fennell thought she was truly being so coy and perverted but it was just so much tamer than anticipated? if you’re going to remove the themes that make the book what it is in your adaptation, at least give me something slutty!!! - movie (adult versions) heathcliff and catherine were genuinely SO unlikable, literally had NO redeeming qualities and it was hard to root for them. just two toxic people having a petty off. that being said, god margot robbie is so beautiful. I don’t know, if it was not associated with wuthering heights at all, and emerald fennell had just made something with the content in the movie and at least differently named characters, it could have been a fine movie. a little boring after the first half, but fine enough.
