Black Caesar
The best blaxploitation film of all time. Everything from the amazing soundtrack by James Brown, the wonderful cinematography, the thoroughly entertaining dialogue, the gruesome action, and the fantastic lead performance of Fred Williamson, makes this an extremely enthralling watch. I don’t think there’s a single boring scene here, every single moment of this movie stands out, and I was hooked throughout the entire runtime. This film probably has the best interpretation of the “rise and fall” gangster trope, Tommy Gibbs is a genuinely awful dude, but you still manage to sympathize with him and see brief glimpses of his humanity. Make no mistake though, Tommy Gibbs is more of a villain than an anti hero, almost everyone he comes in contact with either dies, or ends up meeting a tragic fate due to his self destructive greed. His ego is only rivaled by the main antagonist “mckinley” who might take the crown for one of the most rage inducing villains I’ve ever seen in a movie. Black Caesar is a film I would recommend to anybody, even if exploitation films aren’t your thing, it’s hard to not enjoy a film this explosive.
