Rest In Peace Bella Tarr, although your death was what finally convinced me to bite the bullet and watch this, what I will now call a masterpiece.
addressing the 7 hour length which so many people focus on, I did not mind it. I thought of it as watching a TV series, which are certainly longer than 7 hours, especially with how the movie is split into segments. I tried to watch it in one sitting but ended up having to stop at 6 hours and watch the final hour the next day. I'll return to the length in a bit.
This is my first Bella Tarr movie, arguably his most infamous, and I love it. Plot, solid (I know it was adapted from a book but when I rate adaptations I treat them as if the plots original, as its usually my first time experiencing the plot at all). I really loved seeing the events from different perspective during Estike's segment, hell her whole performance was incredible and that long walk was just so amazing it was like I was inside her head without her having to say anything.
Now at first, I wasn't enjoying it. I found it hard to follow, I didn't understand why the shots were so long and drawn out, it felt pointlessly artsy, but I stuck it through because I'm a firm believer in "seeing the vision" as well as all the praise I've heard. Around 4 hours in, Estike's death, is when I started getting it, the whole story came together like your first playthrough of outer wilds. It's not something I have the drive to rewatch, but I know that it's gonna stick in my head for a while.
