Tokyo!
Damn near a perfect movie, wow.
1. Interior Design - Michel Gondry
my 2nd favourite film in this, like a feminist Metamorphosis, which is awesome. The symbolism is heavy handed, I love a surreal, no-explanation kafka-esque twist in films, this is one of my favourite ones yet. I adored the soundtrack throughout it too, and the visuals of her transformation carried such a creepy sense of isolation and desperation from her character. The objectification of women.
2. Merde- Leos Carax
Leos Carax is the goat. Absolutely bizzare in the best way possible, and dark, dark as shit. I love Denis Lavant, and of course this introduces us to the Merde character who we'll see more of later. Merde is a commentary on many qualities of Japan, notably it's dark greusome history now tucked away behind a polite facade (Which is non-specific to Japan, every country has its skeletons.). Underneath the city of Tokyo in the sewers emerges a deranged monster, equipped with grenades of the past, wreaking havoc. Fun to watch too, we all love to watch innocent people blown up by a screaming laughing redhead on screen. Bravo.
3. Shaking Tokyo - Bong Joon Ho
Predictions, predictions, 2008 couldn't have gotten in better. There isn't much else to be said that isn't taken from watching this film, The relatively recent upsurge in AI chatbots enforcing social isolation across the technological world will only spiral until something like this is happening. That combined with the vicious cycles of hate and misogyny ever-present with social outcasts, I'm sure there's a few incel chuds who wish that real women had a love and coma button on them.
The most unrealistic part was that these people's lifestyles would be funded, it's more likely we'll be left to starve on the streets.
