my 200th film before the year ends and after much pressure, i decided on this and man was i not disappointed  ive seen this up and close. a narcissist in very clear form, hiding behind charm and slick tongue euphemisms, and brute, and it’s easy to fall victim to it but up close, it’s selfishness, disregard, and ego. yet this is phenomenal, because he wants to be loved yet at the same time wants to be loved in spite of his wrong doings, though he wasn’t just born this way. a product of his isolated, tough going environment. he followed the law of his father, and it did nothing for him; so now he takes all he can with little left to give. paul newman is perfect as this character who moves you with his charisma yet you know he’s no good, like the characters around him. ugh he’s so good in this and so is the rest of the performers. his nephew is perfect as the all american kid next door, and alma is quick witted and whole. and ritter’s direction is flawless man. no notes and a perfect movie to end out my film goal for 2026. and paul newman, just know, you are deeply missed!
