The Lighthouse
i had to sit on this for a while to really articulate why i feel the way i do about this movie.
robert eggers is a genius.
the story of prometheus through the lens of the 1890s laborer, the unapologetic look at the combination of fear and sexuality, the narrowing and bleak atmosphere, the way it plays with memory and lies and truth to disorient you—all of it is perfect.
it isn’t an easy watch, and there are a lot of moments where you’re left unsettled and without answers. it’s suffocating and claustrophobic, all the way down to the aspect ratio, and it’s meant to be.
and eggers is at his peak here visually. spiral staircases, the way he plays with light, the sea rolling in grayscale haze. the scene of the siren first showing herself will sit with me for a long time.
