Possession
wow. just wow.
In Possession, a married couple, Anna and Mark embark on a lethal spiral of love, loss, faith, and just plain murder. The blue backdrop upon which this story rests is as cold and isolating as their toxic relationship. The chaos of their marriage is amplified by their views of faith and chance, as Anna is quoted saying “my faith didn’t allow me to wait for chance, and chance didn't give me enough faith.” She goes on to literally miscarry “faith” in a jaw-dropping multi-minute long scene in a subway tunnel set in cold war Germany. This commentary on marriage and God as a harbinger of chaos (or “chance”) feels claustrophobic, but all-to real.
I am truly blown away by the social commentary made in this film, and will be mulling it over in my head for a long time. (probably forever). I have a lot more to say about this film, but this is a start.
