Sentimental Value
A present father is worth way more than a perfect dad
Joachim Trier crafts an absolutely beautiful and devastating story about the way generational trauma can haunt a family, and it’s up to them whether they let it build them up or tear them apart.
I knew this was one I needed to catch before the Oscar’s and I’m so glad I did. Some of the best performances of last year as well as maybe the best screenplay of the entire year. The Worst Person In The World is one of my favorite movies of the decade so there was always a high chance I would love this.
When you have such a distant father, it’s hard to grasp that he is also human. One minute they’re the worst person in the world that you cannot rely on, and the next they show that they might know you better than anyone. It’s a vicious cycle that breaks you down, and this film shows that beautifully.
I really loved this, adding it to the “watch to devastate myself for some reason” list.
There’s one major difference in the way we grew up, I had you.
