Winter Light
"Suffering is incomprehensible, so it needs no explanation. There is no creator. No sustainer of life. No designer."
Bergman's work left me speechless yet again. Winter Light is one of the those elusive work where not a single frame is wasted. For me this might be his most personal work that I have seen. Felt almost like a semi-biography where he expresses his personal statement of faith by blending fiction with reality (Recurring feat in his every film). Through the Priest's character we get to see the Bergman's inner conflict with the idea of faith.
In the film, the parallel between Jesus and the Priest caught my utmost attention. The parallel of Jesus's statue being crucified in church and Priest being crucified in church figuratively (Rigorously devoted to church duty even though he was physically and mentally tormented by doing so) was executed so well. They experienced excruciating betrayal when both Jesus and Priest faced their greatest hardship (overwhelmed by feeling of doubt over God's existence during their last act of perseverance) and the response was, God's Silence.
Utterly speechless after watching this film. Gonna stick with me for a very long time.
