Happiness
vardas use of colour the film is exceptional. the bright yellows and greens portrays the warmth of a life that should be enough. and it was.
francois had everything and still reached for more. not out of pain or longing. but just because he could. he tells his wife therese, with a straight face, that loving another woman only made him happier. as if more happiness for him couldn’t possibly mean less of it for her. the colour never changes after thereses suicide. that’s the worst part. the picnics continue. the softness remains. just with a different woman in the same light. varda doesn’t darken the palette because francois doesn’t darken either. the world he lives in is too full of itself to register what it’s lost.
