The Leopard
*“O faithful star…
**when will you give me an appointment less ephemeral,
**far from all this,
*in your own region of perennial certitude.”
Where must we go when all seems lost?
This life is fleeting, but we can make the most of it now…or envelop ourselves in the darkness prematurely.
The Prince “straddles two worlds, ill at ease in both,” because he knows that change—though not for the better—is inevitable, and that the era of nobility, the leopards and lions, will soon fall to those he describes as jackals and hyenas. He lives with the judgment that the vanity of the Sicilian people is greater than their misery, in the sense that they believe themselves too perfect to change.
This film is gorgeously decorated, & the last act alone makes the 3 hours worth it.
